HISTORY
The Hospital
Verdugo Hills Hospital is a 158-bed hospital nestled in the foothills of La Cañada Flintridge and the Crescenta Valley. It serves nearly 200,000 residents in the greater foothills community as well as many patients who travel from surrounding areas.
Verdugo Hills Hospital began as Behrens Memorial Hospital, which was established in 1947. Instead of attempting to expand the Behrens facility, a new hospital was built on the hilltop land donated by the Greene family.
Since its doors opened in 1972, Verdugo Hills Hospital has grown with the community. Some of the milestones include:
1985 – Outpatient diagnostic and surgery services were added
1988 – Critical care units remodeled
1991 – 18-bed transitional care unit opened
1999 – Wound Care program began
2003 – Emergency Department expanded
2004 – A Balanced Life program introduced
2005 – Gastroenterology Department updated
2005 – ACCESS digital imaging and records system introduced
Over the years, Verdugo Hills Hospital has remained the area’s only independent, freestanding hospital, giving it the flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of local residents. The majority of its physicians, board of directors, and employees reside right here in the greater foothills communities giving them a personal interest in the hospital’s success. Verdugo Hills Hospital is a medical center that is truly operated by the community for the community.
The Logo
The Verdugo Hills Hospital logo is composed of 12 Vs forming an abstract sun; the traditional Native American sign of life reflecting the purposes and functions of a total community healthcare facility. The 12 Vs represent the 12 months of the year and the 12 numerals on a clock, indicating total service around the clock throughout the year.
